Focus on Passion: Alexander Cruz’s Journey with the 2003 Focus SVT

For Alexander Cruz, passion meets perseverance with his 2003 Ford Focus SVT, "Shadow." From restoring the interior to adding rare lighting and wheels, his journey reflects dedication and love for Ford. Follow his build as he transforms Shadow from a clunker to a street and show-ready masterpiece.

For Alexander Cruz, the love for Ford cars sparked when he first saw a Focus ST on the road and later at a Ford dealership. As a tow truck driver in York, Pennsylvania, Alex spends his days behind the wheel of powerful machines like the Ford F650 and International 4700, where he experiences the thrill of manual driving and turbo sounds firsthand. His job fuels his passion for cars, especially his prized possession—a 2003 Ford Focus SVT named “Shadow.”

The Start of a Journey

Inspired by icons like Ken Block and the legendary WRC Focus, Alex’s vision for his SVT Focus was clear from the start: a mix of show-stopping aesthetics and street credibility. His goal was to build a car that would be as comfortable on the road as it was impressive at shows. Shadow became the embodiment of that dream.

Building the Unique “Shadow”

One of the most defining features of Shadow is the combination of rare and custom lighting elements. Alex installed a pair of Spec-D smoked LED taillights and eBay halos up front. The halos were a labor of love, as he had to rewire the entire harness and make custom plugs to fit the factory setup, including modifications to the center lighting plug. The addition of the Euro grille, which took five months to arrive, was a crucial aesthetic upgrade.

The wheels are another highlight. Rota Slipstreams in 17×7 spec add a rare touch since these wheels are nearly impossible to find stateside. Combined with OEM SVT brakes and suspension, the car maintains its signature handling while standing out visually.

Challenges and Triumphs

Every car build comes with its own set of hurdles, and for Alex, the most challenging part was restoring the interior. Having no experience with interior work, he took on the task headfirst, learning as he went. Putting the car back together was a moment of pride that marked the transformation of Shadow from a neglected project into a road-ready machine.

One of Alex’s most memorable moments was pulling up to a local meet and being greeted with awe as fellow enthusiasts realized it was an SVT Focus. The car, once a forgotten clunker, had become an attention-grabbing gem thanks to his dedication and passion.

What’s Next for Shadow

Alex has big plans for his Focus SVT. Up next are the No Limit body kit, coilovers, and the exhaust sitting in his garage, as well as bucket seats he drove 200 miles to pick up. He also dreams of swapping in a complete ZX3 head with a JRSC kit for a power boost.

Finding Purpose and Perseverance

One of the most significant challenges in Alex’s automotive journey came when his first SVT’s engine blew, forcing him to sell the car and nearly pushing him out of the car scene. But when another SVT popped up for sale, he knew he couldn’t give up. After saving every penny, he bought the car, fixed it, and learned the value of resilience. Now, with his third SVT, he’s committed to building and maintaining a car he can truly be proud of.

Words of Wisdom

Alex’s advice to other Ford enthusiasts is simple: “If you see something you want and are scared to get it because it looks too far gone, it can be done. Just pour your heart into it.”
