For Phil Douglas, passion for Fords started with seeing iconic models like the XR3i, XR2, Cosworths, and RS Turbos on the streets of Liverpool. As a vehicle technician, Phil’s job not only helps him keep his own cars running but also fuels his love for modifying and fine-tuning his rides. His journey through the Ford community has been shaped by 26 years of attending Ford Fair, where the inspiration for his builds began.
Meet “Whitey” – The OEM+ Fiesta ST180
Phil’s 2013 Fiesta ST180, affectionately called “Whitey”, is more than just a car; it’s a reflection of his dedication to balancing power, performance, and style. Originally built for show, the car is now a Stage 3 beast that blends OEM+ quality with aftermarket excellence.
Performance and Power Upgrades
Phil’s ST180 is equipped to dominate both the street and the show floor, thanks to a comprehensive list of performance upgrades:
- Engine Mods:
- ITG, Mountune intake pipe, Mountune crossover pipe, and turbo elbow.
- Mountune hybrid turbo and Collins wastegate actuator.
- Airtec big boost pipes and stage 3 intercooler.
- Mongoose 3” cat-back exhaust and Mountune sports cat for optimal flow.
- Collins CP3E mapping for precise performance tuning.
- Drivetrain Enhancements:
- Quaife differential for improved traction during acceleration.
- GFB diverter valve and full Mountune engine breather kit with twin catch cans.
- Braking Power:
- Megane RS Brembo calipers and ST170 300mm EBC USR discs with Yellow Stuff pads.
- Mountune braided lines front and rear for consistent braking.
- Wheels and Tires:
- Compomotive MO 1785 wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6.
- Power Figures:
- 270 BHP and 352 Nm of torque.
- 0-60 in around 5 seconds, with a quarter-mile time of 14.03 seconds.
Handling and Suspension Setup
To match the power, Phil has ensured that Whitey corners like it’s on rails.
- Full polybushing for rigidity.
- Front lower strut brace, Whiteline rear anti-roll bar, and Mishimoto boot brace for optimal handling.
- Up next, Phil plans to add Bilstein B8s with Eibach Pro Springs or Bilstein B14 coilovers to fine-tune the ride height and stiffness.
Building a Community Spirit
Phil’s love for Fords doesn’t just end with his own car. As a member of the Oval Owners Club and active participant in online Ford groups, he’s been part of the community for over two decades. His advice to fellow Ford owners is simple:
“Don’t pour money into a car you’re not passionate about. Wait for your dream car and build it the way you want.”
One of his proudest moments was attending his 25th Ford Fair, celebrating not just his car but also the community that has shaped his journey.
Challenges Along the Way
One of the biggest challenges Phil faced was changing his mind about modifications after already investing in them. Years of testing and tweaking have made Whitey the balanced build it is today. His secret? Persistence and passion—and the willingness to keep refining until it feels just right.
Keeping the Legacy Alive
Phil’s future plans include keeping the ST180 in immaculate condition and showcasing it at more events, including trips to Santa Pod. Alongside his Fiesta, he’s working on another project—his ST150.
Message to the Ford Fam
Phil appreciates how the Ford Fam community inspires each other.
“Everyone just keep at it—we’re all into the same thing. Some builds inspire people without even knowing it!”
